How MSD’s Color Lab Actually Operates

1. Reference intake & digitization
We accept reference swatches as Pantone TPX/TPG chips, fabric swatches, printed cards, or customer-supplied physical samples. Each reference is scanned on an X-Rite eXact and the L*a*b* values are logged in a per-client color file that lives in our ERP for the lifetime of the project.
2. Lab dip round
First lab dips ship within 5–7 business days. We send 3–4 variant dips per color so the buyer has a range to choose from, not a single take-it-or-leave-it sample. Standard terms cover 2 lab rounds at no charge; beyond that, each additional round is USD 60 per color to cover dye and labor.
3. Strike-off on production substrate
Once a lab dip is signed off, we move 200–500 m of strike-off on the actual production substrate (satin, grosgrain, organza, velvet — each behaves differently under the same dye). The strike-off is what we ship for final buyer sign-off; lab dips alone are not production-equivalent.
4. Inline production QC
Every bulk run carries an inline spectrophotometer check at the start, middle, and end of the lot. Any reading outside ΔE 1.5 from the strike-off triggers a stop-and-investigate. The data is included in the shipment QC dossier as a PDF so the buyer’s own QA team can audit it.
5. Locked-formula library
Once a formula is signed off, it is filed under the client’s name and project. Any future reorder — even years later — opens from the same file, which is how we compress reorder lead time to 14 days instead of 28.
What “Good Enough” ΔE Means by Use Case
Not every program needs ΔE 1.0. Here is the framework we walk buyers through during the first call:
- ΔE ≤ 1.0: Required for beauty, skincare, and luxury packaging where the ribbon sits next to the brand’s primary logo color and any visible drift looks like a defect.
- ΔE ≤ 1.5: Standard for retail, gift packaging, and private label — most large retailers audit at this band.
- ΔE ≤ 2.5: Acceptable for Christmas decoration, party favors, and craft where the ribbon is one of many visual elements.
- ΔE ≤ 4.0: Only for “approximate” or “vintage tone” programs where the buyer is explicitly requesting a distressed, washed, or heathered look.
3 Things B2B Buyers Can Do to Speed Up Color Matching
From running 600+ custom color programs a year, here is what consistently separates a 14-day first delivery from a 60-day headache:
- Send the original physical swatch, not a photo or screen grab. A phone photo of a Pantone chip is a starting point but not a substitute — the spectrophotometer needs the real material to read.
- Lock the substrate before locking the color. Satin and grosgrain will render the same PMS code differently. If you switch substrate mid-project, expect a new lab round.
- Tell us the end use upfront. “It’s for baby clothing packaging” triggers a different dye set (low-migration, OEKO-TEX) than “it’s for a Christmas tree ornament” — and the lab dispatches accordingly.
